PRESENTACIÓN. “BEING A TRANSLATED BEING”: MUJER Y TRADUCCIÓN

Most of the developments in Translation Studies that have occurred since the 1980s derive from what is known as “Cultural Turn”. In this context, we observe that the translation thought and the feminist theory are both interested to define identity at the linguistic, social and gender level, contributing, in this way, to place the transfer of meaning between different languages in the field of poststructuralism. This has had very important consequences for the translation thought in our times.The theory of feminist translation investigates the legacy, which is persistent in history, of a double "subalternity": that of women and that of translation. The way in which translation has been “feminized” over time is clearly due to gender constructions, as Lori Chamberlain already showed in 1988 in her essay “Gender and the Metaphorics of Translation”. Beyond the desired and essential visibility that the female-translator shares with the male-translator, the redefinition of this female translator subject from less essentialist and more cultural positions requires a new poetics, as well as an ethics and politics that feminist translation has strived to define and achieve, with its lights and shadows, constantly questioning and reinterpreting key concepts about translation, such as “fidelity” to the original, and advocating the revision of conventional translation strategies.Starting from an initial overview of the connections between feminist theory/ies and translation thought, and the contributions of Feminism to the latter, this introduction to the special issue of TRANSFER for the year 2020, entitled “Translating in the Feminine: Textual and Political Practices”, presents a total of 15 essays on this topic, from different perspectives and with diverse methodological approaches, which show the interest in this issue and the vitality of this line of research at present.La mayor parte de los desarrollos en los Estudios de Traducción que se producen desde los años 80 derivan del conocido como “Cultural Turn”. En ese contexto el pensamiento sobre la traducción y la teoría feminista se encuentran en su interés por definir la identidad en el plano tanto lingüístico como social y de género, contribuyendo, por esta vía, a situar la transferencia de significado entre diferentes lenguas en el ámbito crítico del postestructuralismo. Esto tuvo importantes consecuencias para el pensamiento sobre la traducción.Desde la teoría de la traducción feminista se investiga el legado, que es persistente en la historia, de una doble “subalternidad”: la de la mujer y la de la traducción. El modo como la traducción se ha visto “feminizada” a lo largo de los tiempos obedece claramente a construcciones de género, como Lori Chamberlain puso ya de manifiesto en 1988 en su ensayo “Gender and the Metaphorics of Translation”. Más allá de la deseada e imprescindible visibilización, que la traductora comparte con el traductor, la redefinición de este sujeto traductor femenino, desde posiciones menos esencialistas y más culturales, exige una nueva poética, una ética y una política, que la traducción feminista se ha esforzado por definir y alcanzar, con sus luces y sus sombras, cuestionando y reinterpretando constantemente conceptos clave sobre la traducción, como el de “fidelidad” al original, y propugnando la revisión de las estrategias traductoras convencionales.Partiendo de una panorámica inicial sobre las conexiones entre la(s) teoría(s) feminista(s) y el pensamiento sobre la traducción, y las aportaciones del Feminismo a esta última, esta introducción del volumen especial de la revista TRANSFER para el año 2020, titulado “Traducir en femenino: Prácticas textuales y políticas”, presenta un total de 15 artículos en torno a este tema, realizados desde diferentes perspectivas y enfoques metodológicos, que muestran el interés por este tema y la vitalidad de esta línea de investigación actualmente
